Brian Richards was committed to stand trial on Friday for the murder of popular entertainer and educator Kirwyn Mars, better known as “Sir Mars.”
Senior Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Diamond/Grove Magistrate Court ordered Richards to appear at the next practicable sitting of the Demerara Assizes.
Richards, who resides in John Fernandez Squatting Area, Georgetown, was charged with the murder of Mars, which occurred on May 7, 2023, at Plantation Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD).
At his initial court appearance, Richards was remanded to prison and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.
According to reports, Mars and Richards were together on the night of the incident at Green City Bar, located at the intersection of D’Urban Street and Vlissengen Road.
CCTV footage confirmed their presence at the venue. The two men then proceeded in Richards’ vehicle to a street in Plantation Providence.
Investigations revealed that a misunderstanding between Mars and Richards escalated inside the vehicle, leading both men to arm themselves with knives. They inflicted wounds on each other during the altercation.
Mars attempted to flee on foot toward the eastern side, but Richards reportedly reversed the vehicle, striking and pinning Mars against a fence along the street. This fatal confrontation led to the charges against Richards.
