More than two decades after fleeing justice, Philbert Thomas has pleaded guilty to the 1998 murder of his wife, Viola Thomas.
He entered the plea with explanation, recently before Justice Simone Morris at the High Court in Demerara, and is now awaiting sentencing.

The fatal stabbing took place on September 5, 1998, in Waini, North West District, Essequibo. Viola, 23, was attending a fun day event when she was allegedly attacked and stabbed multiple times by Thomas.

Following the killing, Thomas evaded capture for over 20 years until 2019, when he was arrested in Region Ten in connection with another stabbing incident.

His apprehension in that case led to his prosecution for Viola’s murder. The court will determine his sentence on July 24, 2025.
