ExxonMobil’s planned Longtail development is being built as a long-term operation, expected to run for roughly three decades, and is set to deliver one billion cubic feet of gas per day along with 250,000 barrels of condensate. The scale and lifespan of the project place it among the company’s most significant ventures in the Stabroek Block, signalling a major shift in Guyana’s energy landscape.

At the Berbice Development Summit, ExxonMobil Guyana President Alistair Routledge explained that Longtail will be the company’s first project in Guyana aimed specifically at non-associated gas. He said the field development plan is scheduled for submission early next year, with a final investment decision targeted for the end of 2026. The project is expected to anchor a wider national push toward gas-driven industrialisation.

Routledge linked the new development to the Gas-to-Energy project at Wales, noting that the 200-kilometre pipeline from Liza will feed a 300-megawatt power plant now under construction. Although the pipeline is designed to handle 120 million cubic feet of gas per day, it will initially transport about half that amount. He said the intention is to deliver stable, lower-emission power that can support economic diversification.

He also pointed out that ExxonMobil is evaluating gas potential in the southeast section of the Stabroek Block, as government has signalled interest in developing a gas market in the Berbice region. The company views this as part of a larger integrated plan to bring more gas onshore and spur new industries.

According to Routledge, Longtail is expected to open the door to a sustained gas-powered economy, laying the foundation for sectors that do not yet exist but will rely on affordable and reliable energy.
