A man who stole and leaked his ex-girlfriend’s private photos is now facing two years behind bars, as the Courts continue to clamp down on cyber offences and online harassment. On Monday, 34-year-old IT technician Jeremy Smith was sentenced to 24 months’ imprisonment and fined $2.5 million after the Magistrate found him guilty of multiple cyber-crime offences tied to the online release of his former partner’s intimate photos. The case dates back to July 2024, when the woman reported to Police that Smith had accessed her phone and WhatsApp messages without permission, copied several private images, and later circulated them on social media after she moved on from the relationship.Throughout the trial, the victim detailed how the harassment escalated. She said Smith repeatedly called and intimidated her even after she filed charges, forcing her to lodge additional complaints. The Court also noted that this was not the first time she sought protection, as a restraining order had been issued against Smith two years prior because of his threatening behaviour.
