Steve Williams, known as “Short Man,” was on Thursday remanded to prison after being charged with the murder of Dexter France, also called “Chiney.”
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the fatal incident occurred on Sunday, May 11, at a gold mining campsite in Wrong Turn Backdam, Puruni River, Region Seven.

Williams, a 20-year-old resident of Khan Hill, Mabaruma, North West District, appeared before the Bartica Magistrate’s Court, where he was slapped with the murder charge.
He was not required to plead and was remanded to prison until his next court appearance on July 10, 2025.
According to police, France and Williams, who were working together at the mining camp, were involved in an argument. During the quarrel, Williams allegedly armed himself with a cutlass and dealt France a fatal chop to the chest.
Investigators processed the scene, and France’s body was transported to the Bartica Regional Hospital before being taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home for a post-mortem examination.
On Wednesday, May 14, government pathologist Dr. Nehaul Singh conducted the autopsy and confirmed the cause of death as a “chop wound to the chest.” Williams was arrested on Monday, May 12, at the Itaballi Police Checkpoint.
