President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali has announced major new financial support measures aimed at helping persons living with disabilities become more independent and better equipped for income-generating opportunities.

Speaking during the International Day of Persons with Disabilities observance, the President revealed that a special financing window will soon be introduced through the new Development Bank. Under this arrangement, persons with disabilities will be able to access interest-free, collateral-free loans specifically to support commercial and entrepreneurial ventures.

“Introducing a special financing window for PWDs through the development bank to be established early next year, under which interest-free, collateral-free loans will be offered to PWDs for commercial income-generating projects,” he affirmed.

This initiative is part of a broader national effort to ensure persons with disabilities fully participate in economic life and contribute meaningfully to Guyana’s growth.

At the same time, President Ali emphasized improvements to access and affordability of essential mobility devices and related support services. He reminded the gathering of recent changes that have removed taxes on disability-specific items, saying, “We removed all taxes on specific services and specific support that PWDs require.” He added that the government has already distributed free assistive aids to thousands and that availability will continue to expand in the coming years to better ensure independence.

Increasing access to electronic devices and durable mobility aids forms a key part of this push. “Increasing the availability of durable mobility and other assistive aids, including electronic devices, to ensure greater independence,” the Head of State highlighted.

These interventions, he said, are designed to empower persons living with disabilities through self-fulfilling work and financial stability, reinforcing government’s commitment to equality, dignity and inclusion.

“Through these and other measures, in the coming months and years, my government will continue to create and generate tangible advantages and benefits for PWDs,” President Ali stated.

With strengthened financial tools, increased assistive aid support, and Guyana’s enhanced disability rights framework, the President assured that no one will be left behind as the country continues its rapid national development.
