Driver Charged in West Coast Demerara Hit-and-Run Fatality
A 57-year-old man has been charged in connection with a hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a pedestrian on Wallers Delight Public Road, West Coast Demerara.
The accident occurred on Friday, November 21, 2025, at about 18:10 hrs and involved motor pickup GKK #5230, reportedly driven by Leon De Nobrega of Lot 809 Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, and pedestrian Anand Persaud, a 65-year-old man of no fixed place of abode. Persaud later died from injuries he sustained in the incident.
On Monday, January 19, 2026, De Nobrega was formally charged with three offences: failing to stop after an accident, failing to report an accident, and failing to render assistance to an injured person, all contrary to Section 62 of the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic Act, Chapter 51:02.
He appeared at the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Alisha George, where the charges were read to him. De Nobrega pleaded not guilty to all charges and was granted cash bail in the sum of $20,000 on each charge.
The matter has been adjourned to March 2, 2026.
