Walton-Desir Excluded from Parliamentary Committees Despite Azruddin Mohamed’s Earlier Promise

Forward Guyana Movement (FGM) leader and Member of Parliament Amanza Walton-Desir has not been appointed to any parliamentary committee under the 13th Parliament, according to the official list of committee memberships released by the National Assembly.

The appointments show that opposition positions on the various standing, sectoral, and special committees were assigned to members of A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) and the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party.

Walton-Desir’s exclusion comes despite earlier indications that she would have been part of the opposition’s committee structure following the election of WIN leader Azruddin Mohamed as Opposition Leader in January 2026.

At the time, Mohamed had acknowledged Walton-Desir’s support during his successful bid for the position and had indicated that his approach to parliamentary representation would include broader participation from opposition members.

Walton-Desir was also previously identified as a possible candidate to chair the Parliamentary Sectoral Committee on Foreign Relations, given her background and previous involvement in parliamentary matters.

However, the finalized committee appointments reveal that she was not selected to serve on any of the National Assembly’s committees, including key bodies such as the Public Accounts Committee, the Parliamentary Management Committee, and the Committee on Appointments.

Parliamentary committees play a key role in examining legislation, reviewing government spending, and conducting oversight on behalf of the National Assembly.

The absence of FGM representation on any parliamentary committee has raised questions about the party’s role within the opposition structure and how committee positions were allocated among opposition members.

Neither Walton-Desir nor the Forward Guyana Movement has publicly commented on the committee appointments at the time of publication.
