Police Corporal Yonelle Cumberbatch is set to face trial on August 17 over the death of 15-year-old schoolboy Navindra Mahes.
Cumberbatch, 35, appeared at the Sparendaam Magistrates’ Court, where the trial date was fixed. She has pleaded not guilty to a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
It is alleged that on October 30, 2025, Cumberbatch was driving motorcar PAB 214 along Success Public Road, East Coast Demerara, when she allegedly drove in a dangerous manner and struck Mahes as he attempted to cross the roadway at a pedestrian crossing.
Mahes, a student of Annandale Secondary School, sustained serious injuries, including head injuries and a fractured right leg. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where he died while undergoing treatment at approximately 9:56 a.m.
Cumberbatch was previously granted bail in the sum of $500,000. She is required to report to the police on the first Monday of each month and surrender her passport to the court as part of her bail conditions.
Her trial is scheduled to commence on August 17.
