APNU NDC Councillor Chichester declares ‘total commitment’ to PPP/C…Says decision was not influenced by promises of benefits or political positions

APNU Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) Councillor Trevon Chichester has publicly declared his support for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C), saying his decision was not influenced by promises of benefits or positions.

In a statement, Chichester said his decision followed what he described as a “revelation of deceit” within the political grouping he previously supported.

“For the record, I was not promised anything, not even a Beharry Bullet,” Chichester said.

He added: “I have chosen to support the PPP/C with vigor and total commitment.”

Chichester said his decision was driven by his focus on community development and helping residents access available assistance.

“If I were after power and position, I would’ve remained in the PNC and worked 10x harder, but I chose to believe my eyes and put in that 10x effort into making my community better, into pointing people to where they can find help,” he stated.

The councillor also levelled several criticisms against opposition politicians, alleging that while some prosper and know how to access government programmes, ministries and business opportunities, that information is not sufficiently shared with grassroots supporters.

Chichester further contrasted the former APNU+AFC administration’s performance between 2015 and 2020 with that of the current PPP/C Government, arguing that the current administration has delivered more of its commitments. He estimated that more than 60 per cent of the PPP/C’s promises have already been fulfilled, though he did not provide supporting figures for that estimate.

He also referenced flooding at Highdam, which he blamed on neglect under the previous administration. Chichester said officials had been warned more than a month beforehand, claiming that he personally investigated the situation, documented it and issued warnings.

Turning to opportunities available to Guyanese, Chichester argued that while persons should not expect immediate wealth or a house and land right away, government programmes can provide financial and technical assistance to establish and operate businesses.

He encouraged persons seeking assistance to contact him or visit Freedom House or an NDC to enquire about available support.

Chichester concluded by calling on Guyanese to work together in nation-building while continuing to highlight injustice and communities that may be underserved.

“Greatness is not founded in toeing the line or group-think; that’s not what we are calling for. Greatness is founded by working together,” he said.
