Guyana is being urged to sharpen its competitive edge as Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago strengthen their energy sectors.

AmCham Guyana Executive Director Richard Leo says the country cannot rely solely on its oil and gas success to keep attracting investment.

He says Guyana must improve the speed and efficiency of doing business and continue comparing its investment environment with competing markets.

AmCham has pointed to modernising public procurement, improving the permitting process, and advancing Guyana’s credit rating as areas that could help attract more investors.

Leo also wants Guyanese businesses to position themselves for partnerships with US companies, particularly in healthcare, agriculture and infrastructure.

He says the longer-term goal should be to diversify the economy, build local skills and businesses, and expand investment beyond oil and gas.
