Region Six Regional Education Officer Sattish Udit has confirmed that more than 20 students of the Port Mourant Secondary School were stung by bees during school hours on Wednesday.
Udit said the affected students were taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where they received medical attention before being discharged and sent home.
The incident occurred shortly after midday while students were on the school’s playground at the back of the institution.
Following the attack, school officials contacted a beekeeper, who visited the compound and removed the bees from the area.
Udit said arrangements have been made for normal classes to continue, although the school’s playfield will remain closed for the remainder of the week as a precaution.
In a notice to parents and guardians, the school said the bee threat had been addressed but urged students to stay away from the playfield and follow all safety instructions while additional measures are being implemented.
Parent Deoraj Arjune said he rushed to the hospital after learning that his 13-year-old daughter had been among the students stung.
He said teachers transported the affected children to the hospital, while his two sons, who also attend the school, were not affected.
