Women seeking breast cancer care in Guyana are expected to benefit from better coordination between screening, diagnosis and treatment services under a new national action plan aimed at reducing delays and improving patient support.

The Ministry of Health launched its Action Plan for Breast Cancer Management on Monday at its Brickdam conference room.

According to an October 27 release, the initiative prioritises stronger referral systems, better follow-up and assistance for patients as they move through the healthcare system.

The plan seeks to improve collaboration among radiology, pathology, surgery, oncology and primary healthcare services. The aim is to ensure that women receive timely medical attention and continued guidance throughout their care.

Patient navigation, the support provided to help patients access and move between services, is among the areas identified for strengthening. The Ministry said effective breast cancer management must extend beyond initial screening and diagnosis to include treatment and follow-up.

Delivering the feature address, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony emphasised improved screening, early diagnosis, expanded treatment services and closer collaboration among healthcare providers.

The launch brought together medical specialists, policymakers, advocates and other stakeholders. A breast cancer survivor also shared her experience, highlighting the importance of timely access to care and compassionate support.

Among those addressing the gathering were Director of Non-Communicable Diseases Dr Lachmie Lall, Head of Oncology at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), Dr Latoya Gooding, and General Surgery Consultant Dr Ravi Motilall.

National Breast Cancer Steering Committee Co-Chairs, GPHC Radiologist Dr Samantha Jagan and Director of Medical and Professional Services Dr Navindranauth Rambaran, also contributed.

The Ministry said public education and community participation will support the plan’s implementation. Women were encouraged to learn about breast health, recognise potential warning signs, seek medical attention promptly and use available screening and diagnostic services.

The initiative forms part of wider efforts to strengthen diagnostic services, specialised treatment, medical equipment and healthcare training across the country.
