The proposed deep-water port at New Amsterdam and its potential to expand Guyana’s regional trade were among the main issues discussed when the Private Sector Commission (PSC) met with representatives of Cross Boundary Advisory on Tuesday.

In an October 29 release, the PSC said the engagement with Jamie McInerney and Alfonso Pereira Calvo centred on investment opportunities and strategic infrastructure development.

Discussions on the proposed port, involving Bechtel and CGX/NNE in partnership with the Ministry of Public Works, examined potential cargo demand, flows into Guyana and regional connections through Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Barbados. Opportunities to raise capital and provide investment advisory support were also explored.

PSC Chairman Captain Gerald Gouveia Jr. highlighted the importance of developing the Road to Lethem alongside deep-water port infrastructure to improve Guyana’s access to regional markets.

He pointed to opportunities to link local production and logistics with the wider CARICOM food market, which he valued at approximately US$1.5 billion.

The meeting also considered how land around the proposed port could accommodate shore bases, data centres and other supporting infrastructure.

Another area of focus was improving access to information so prospective investors could assess opportunities and make informed decisions.

According to the PSC, the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with investors, advance infrastructure development and position Guyana to benefit from regional and international trade opportunities.
