A new $1.1 billion Amerindian Hostel is set to be constructed along the Ogle Four-Lane Highway, following a sod-turning ceremony held on Friday, November 6, 2026.
The three-storey facility, which will cover approximately 4,170 square metres, is expected to provide improved accommodation and support services for Indigenous families and other hinterland residents travelling to Georgetown.
The project is being undertaken through a partnership between the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs and the Ministry of Housing, through the Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA).
Present at the ceremony were Minister of Housing Collin Croal, Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh, Minister of Amerindian Affairs Sarah Browne-Shadeek, and Minister within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Pauline Sukhai.
Minister Croal said the Housing Ministry was pleased to contribute to the initiative, noting that the facility will provide a more comfortable environment for residents travelling from remote communities to access temporary accommodation, healthcare and other essential services.
The CH&PA’s Projects Department, which led the building’s design, will also oversee the execution of the project, while funding is being provided by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs.
Among those attending were Permanent Secretary Ryan Toolsiram, Director General and Vice-Chair of the National Toshaos Council, Toshao Sonia Latchman, Ministerial Advisor Yvonne Pearson, and Member of Parliament Alister Charlie.
The facility is expected to improve the level of care, comfort and support available to Indigenous families visiting the capital.
