Jawalla residents built the community’s new $15 million Village Council Office, one of two projects in the Region Seven village that together represent a $137 million investment.

Toshao Verron Henry-Williams said the village used part of its Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) allocation to finance the office and covered the rest from its treasury. She outlined the project in a video shared by the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs on Wednesday.

“The contractor was actually from the village, and the workers were from the village. So this is what the people of Jawalla did to build this office,” Henry-Williams said.

The 30-by-40-foot building houses a boardroom, a storeroom and offices for the toshao, secretary and treasurer. It also has space for the community development officer.

Jawalla’s other investment, a $122 million multipurpose centre, gives residents a venue for village meetings, workshops, weddings and other community gatherings.
