Defence attorney Siand Dhurjon on Tuesday completed his cross-examination of Senior Superintendent of Police Prem Narine.
He had spent several days questioning the Special Branch Unit head in the extradition proceedings against Opposition Leader Azruddin Mohamed and his father, Nazar Mohamed.
Narine began giving evidence when the proceedings resumed on September 3 before Chief Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
A significant aspect of Dhurjon’s questioning concerned the intelligence on which Narine relied when he told the court that he considered Azruddin Mohamed a threat to society and national security.
Narine maintained that his assessment was based on intelligence available to the Special Branch Unit and information gathered from sources.
Narine also testified about intelligence linking Azruddin Mohamed to several execution-style killings.
Among the allegations raised was the death of three persons following an explosion involving a vessel at Friendship, East Bank Demerara.
Narine acknowledged that Azruddin Mohamed was not aboard the vessel.
He also referred to an alleged killing involving the stepson of a man known as “Pet Boy” and allegations concerning Regan Rodrigues, whom Narine said was the subject of at least two attempts on his life.
Dhurjon’s questioning also touched on alleged political surveillance and Narine’s relationship with President Dr. Irfaan Ali.
Narine rejected suggestions that police monitored Azruddin Mohamed because of his political activities and denied that the President ordered surveillance of Azruddin Mohamed.
With Dhurjon’s cross-examination completed, Senior Counsel Roysdale Forde has now taken over the cross-examination of Narine.
The extradition proceedings remain ongoing before Chief Magistrate Latchman.
