Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Honourable Priya Manickchand and Permanent Secretary Miguel Choo-Kang, today met with heads of departments and key personnel to review ongoing projects and advance several priorities across the Ministry’s portfolio.
Particular focus was placed on the Ministry’s ongoing market development programme, with Minister Manickchand emphasising the importance of remaining closely engaged at every stage of projects to ensure challenges are identified early and works continue according to schedule.
The Minister reiterated the need for greater discipline among contractors and for the Ministry to continue developing a culture in which projects are completed on time and to the required standard. She also acknowledged the work of heads of departments and their teams in advancing the Ministry’s projects, noting that successful delivery depends on consistent work and oversight across departments.
Discussions also focused on the continued transformation of Georgetown, including plans for the Stabroek Market area and work being advanced with the King’s Foundation. Among the initiatives discussed was the proposed transformation of the Thomas Street Avenue from Lamaha Street to Church Street as a part of the wider Healthy Streets project. This particular project was designed by the King’s Foundation.
Minister Manickchand encouraged stakeholders and citizens to become active participants in the project as efforts move forward to improve the avenue and create a more functional and attractive public space.
The engagement also examined the Ministry’s wider beautification efforts across Georgetown, including improved garbage collection, public washroom facilities and interventions aimed at creating cleaner and better-maintained public spaces throughout the capital.
Minister Manickchand stressed that close monitoring, accountability and collaboration will remain central to the Ministry’s work as it advances projects intended to deliver visible and lasting improvements to communities across Guyana.
