More Guyanese are paying into the National Insurance Scheme (NIS) as employment and business activity continue to grow, according to Senior Minister within the Office of the President with responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh.
Speaking recently, the minister said the number of employed contributors to the scheme has climbed by almost 70,000 over the past five and a half years, representing a 38 per cent increase.
Growth was also recorded among self-employed contributors, with that category expanding by close to 9,000 persons, or 138 per cent.
Dr Singh said the figures reflect the broader changes taking place across the country, as increased investment continues to generate jobs while encouraging more Guyanese to start their own businesses.
“There is more private investment, more employment opportunities are being created, more entrepreneurial opportunities are being created, and more persons are entering entrepreneurial activities and becoming self-employed persons,” he said.
He noted that the expanding contributor base is strengthening the scheme and urged those who have not yet signed up to do so.
“I want to urge you to come in and register,” the minister said.Dr Singh also reminded citizens that NIS offers more than a retirement pension, explaining that contributors may also qualify for medical and other benefits if they become ill or are unable to work.
