President Dr Irfaan Ali has directed the Attorney General to coordinate an inter-agency task force to develop recommendations and actions to address concerns about the mental health, welfare and safety of children in Guyana.

The directive followed a consultative meeting involving representatives of Government, the Judiciary, constitutional commissions, law enforcement agencies and civil society, along with the Speaker of the National Assembly.

According to a release on the engagement, participants agreed that recent events demanded “immediate, drastic and coordinated actions” across society. The release did not identify the specific incidents discussed.

The proposed response would involve parents, schools, social and religious organisations, law enforcement and the Judiciary, with participants recognising the need to address a range of factors affecting children.

Among the measures considered were greater public awareness and education, parental support, school activities, psychosocial services and mentoring. Participants also discussed promoting healthy recreational activities and regulating children’s exposure to music, social media and other influences.

Possible revisions to laws, a review of law enforcement approaches and adjustments to the administration of justice were also identified as areas requiring attention.

The task force will bring together representatives from Government, the Judiciary, law enforcement, religious organisations, civil society and other relevant stakeholder groups.

It has been tasked with designing “a comprehensive plan of recommendations and actions for review and implementation”, drawing on the issues raised during the consultation.
