A subcontractor working with China Railway First Group died early Friday morning after coming into contact with a live section of Guyana Power and Light Inc.’s (GPL) electricity network while carrying out pipe-laying works near Congress Place, Sophia.
According to GPL, the incident occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. on October 16. The company did not identify the deceased in its release.
GPL extended condolences to the man’s family and loved ones, stating, “Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues as they come to terms with this tragic loss.”
The company said the contact with its live network also caused the Sophia F3 feeder to trip, interrupting electricity service to Lamaha Gardens and Section K, Campbellville, for approximately one hour.
The Sophia F6 feeder also went offline for about 30 minutes, affecting customers in Areas A to E, Field Sophia.
Following the fatal incident, GPL reminded contractors working near electricity infrastructure to follow established safety protocols, including coordinating with the utility before starting work.
The company said contractors must identify electrical hazards and ensure that the necessary protective measures are in place before proceeding.
“GPL urges everyone working near its network to make safety the first consideration at every stage of the job,” the utility stated.
