A 25-year-old minibus driver has been charged with two counts of obtaining by false pretence following allegations that he collected money from individuals by promising to secure housing allocations through contacts at the Ministry of Housing.
The accused, Karan Ramlakhan, also known as “Kevin Singh,” is accused of collecting $300,000 from a victim after allegedly claiming that he could facilitate the allocation of a house lot through persons employed at the Ministry of Housing.
Police said the alleged offence occurred in Georgetown between September 10, 2024, and September 14, 2026.
According to investigators, the victim paid the money in the hope of securing a house lot. However, the promised allocation was not obtained, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police.
During the investigation, Ramlakhan reportedly admitted to collecting money from individuals and passing it on to persons he claimed were employed at the Ministry of Housing to expedite housing allocations, in exchange for a percentage of the payments.
He further alleged that the $300,000 received from the victim had been handed over to one of those individuals.
Police also received two additional reports alleging that Ramlakhan collected money from other individuals after promising to secure turnkey houses.
The suspect was arrested on Thursday, October 22, 2026, and charged on Monday, October 26, 2026.
Ramlakhan appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, where he was charged with two counts of obtaining by false pretence, contrary to Section 194 of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.
He pleaded not guilty to both charges and was granted bail of $75,000 on each count, totalling $150,000.
The matter was adjourned to November 23, 2026.
