New regional hospitals have delivered 145,000 outpatient visits, 3,700 surgeries – Pres. Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali says Guyana’s six new regional hospitals have already handled more than 145,000 outpatient visits, 18,500 inpatient admissions and approximately 3,700 surgeries.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Ali said the facilities at De Kinderen, Diamond, Lima, Enmore, No. 75 Village and Bath have delivered “tremendous benefit” since being commissioned.

The President said the hospitals have completed more than one million laboratory tests, approximately 82,200 X-rays, 37,700 ultrasounds and 13,680 CT scans.

He also reported more than 101,000 specialist clinic attendances across services including surgery, gynaecology, dentistry, ophthalmology and ear, nose and throat care. According to Ali, approximately 2,400 babies have also been delivered at the six hospitals, while nearly 280,000 prescriptions have been filled.

“These investments have revolutionised health care in our country,” Ali said, adding that persons using the services have overwhelmingly shared positive experiences.

Among the hospitals, Ali said Diamond Regional Hospital recorded the highest inpatient and surgical workload, with 4,705 admissions, 967 surgeries and 4,797 CT scans.

Enmore Regional Hospital recorded the highest outpatient activity, with 36,670 visits, and the highest X-ray workload, with 21,131 X-rays.

The Head of State said the No. 75 Regional Hospital completed more than 351,000 laboratory tests, while the Lima Regional Hospital conducted more than 289,000 lab tests.

He also said De Kinderen Regional Hospital recorded 8,760 ultrasounds and 61,700 lab tests, while Bath Regional Hospital delivered 25,601 outpatient consultations, 58,755 lab tests and 11,024 X-rays.

The President further stated that average waiting time across the six hospitals is approximately 10 minutes for emergency care and 30 minutes for outpatient services, which he said outperforms most public hospitals globally.

President Ali acknowledged that the health system still faces challenges, but said those challenges are not as widespread as critics may suggest.

“That is not to say there are no challenges. In every system, there are challenges,” he said. “But these challenges are not at a scale that some would want to reflect it as.”

He commended the doctors, nurses, laboratory staff and other medical teams working across the facilities, saying their performance has been “exceptional.”

Ali also provided updates on several major hospital projects now underway. He said Moruca Hospital is 46.5 percent complete, Kato Hospital is 51.9 percent complete, Lethem Hospital is 49.8 percent complete, and West Demerara Hospital is 21 percent complete.

The Bartica Regional Hospital, which has a contract value of $254 million, has not yet started formal construction, but Ali said its preliminary design is 95 percent completed.

On the Maternal and Paediatric Hospital and the New Amsterdam Hospital Complex, Ali said International Chamber of Commerce arbitration began on July 28, 2026, after both contracts were terminated on July 23.
